“ The Waterways in Burgundy ”

With 8,500 km of waterways, France can praise itself as having the longest network of navigable waterways in Europe, even more than Germany and the Netherlands.

Situated in the Mid-East of France, Burgundy can offer the most important French waterways network, with almost 1,200 km of rivers and canals open to pleasure crafts.

Tourisme fluvial en Bourgogne

A privileged location

The watershed of the basins of three major rivers in France is located at the centre of Burgundy:
- the Seine (flowing into the river Manche)
- the Loire (flowing into the Atlantic)
- the Rhône (flowing into the Mediterannean)

To create connections between this three water basins, several canals have been built between the 17th and the 19th century, which have joined other navigable rivers (to be precise the Saône, the Yonne and the Seille), forming an exceptional waterways network today.
