The Vri-Jon yard at Ossenzijl, in the north of the Netherlands, has been building steel motor yachts since the 1980s, and the Contessa range is the one that made its name. This 1993 Contessa 40 is a typical example: a welded steel hull and superstructure, a hard-chine hull form, 12.10 m by 3.78 m, and a layout designed for living aboard.
She has been adapted to the inland waterways: a folding mast replaced the original arch to lower the air draft under bridges, and the central propeller and the bow thruster make manoeuvring in locks and alongside easy.
Serviced every year in a boatyard, with invoices to show for it, she has above all undergone a programme of major works since 2023. In 2024, the whole superstructure, the side decks and the aft section were stripped back to bare metal, epoxy-treated and repainted in two-pack polyurethane, non-slip finish included: 316 hours of yard work.
The same year, the bow thruster motor was replaced; the hydraulic steering pump had been replaced in 2023. Over the winter of 2024-2025, the exhaust was rebuilt and the keel reinforced. Before that, the alternator was replaced with an exchange unit, the steering ram and the raw-water pump renewed (2019), the fridge replaced (2020) and a four-blade bronze propeller fitted (2021).
The interior follows the classic Contessa 40 layout: a saloon open to the galley and the dinette, which converts into a berth, with 2.00 m of headroom. Aft, the main cabin with its double bed is served by a shower room and a separate toilet; forward, the guest cabin has two single beds. A staircase leads up from the saloon to the helm. Outside, the aft deck, laid with Flexiteek like the bathing platform and sheltered by a canopy, extends the saloon, with a swim ladder and a deck shower.
Webasto forced-air heating (2017) and the 2025 Victron installation (a MultiPlus 2,000 W inverter-charger, a BMV-702 battery monitor, an MPPT solar charge controller, two 220 Ah gel service batteries and a solar panel) make it possible to stay aboard without shore power and to extend the season. The 88 hp Solé Diesel SM-90 engine has 4,630 hours; these engines can reach 15,000 hours, subject to proper maintenance, before needing a rebuild; the tanks hold 500 litres of diesel and 440 litres of water, and the 150-litre black-water tank has a pump-out.
